Local by design
The gateway runs on hardware you hold. It is built for low-bandwidth edges and for places where a reliable connection to a distant data center is not a given.
Proven before release
The operating system underneath is a clean-sheet, bare-metal BEAM system being built in public, gate by gate. Nothing is described as done until its gate has passed, and the release itself is still NOT_DONE.
